Important Notes
- Before installing this update, temporarily disconnect the Sony USB Mouse (and any other third-party USB pointing devices).
- If a Windows Me BIOS update is available for your model of notebook, it is recommended to install it before installing this update.
- To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
- It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.
- If either a "Severe" error or "Software Status" message box appears, please check the list of Known Issues .
Download and Installation Instructions
- Download the UMS14WME.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
- If the USB mouse is connected to the computer, unplug it from the computer''s USB connector.
- Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the UMS14WME.EXE file to begin the installation.
- At "Sony USB Mouse Driver Utility for Microsoft Windows Millennium - Welcome" box, click Continue.
NOTE: Several setup boxes will briefly appear as the installation files are copied to the system. As the files are installed, these boxes will close automatically. The SONY USB Mouse Setup program will then launch.
NOTE: If either a Severe error: "OpenFile 1 failed", or a message that the update is not for your model of computer appears, continue with the Known Issues section. - If a "ReadOnly File Detected" box appears, click the box next to "Don''t display this message again" to check it and then click Yes.
- At "Welcome" box, click Next.
NOTE: If a "Confirm File Deletion" box appears, you have already installed this update. Click OK to remove the existing installation files and then repeat steps 4-11 to reinstall the update. - At "Start Installation" box, click Next. Please wait while the drivers are installed.
- One of two possible "Setup Complete" boxes will appear:
- If a "Setup Complete" box with two selections appears, select "I will restart my computer later." (if it isn''t already selected) and then click Finish. The notebook will restart automatically.
- If a "Setup Complete" box without any selections appears, click Finish. The notebook will need to be restarted manually.
- Click Start and click Shut Down.
- At the "Shut Down Windows" box, select "Restart" and click OK.
- After Windows has completed restarting, connect the USB mouse to the USB connector on the computer. Please wait as Windows detects the USB mouse hardware and installs the drivers.
Installation Verification (Optional)
- Plug in Sony USB Mouse into the computers USB Port.
- At the Windows Desktop, right-click the My Computer icon.
- From the menu, click Properties.
- At the "System Properties" box, click the Device Manager tab.
- In the Device Manager tab, click the plus (+) next to the "Human Interface Devices" category to expand it.
- Under the "Sony USB Mouse (HID)" category, double-click the "Sony USB Mouse (HID)" entry.
- At the "Sony USB Mouse (HID) Properties" box, in the "Device status" section, verify that "This device is working properly" is displayed.
NOTE: If the Sony USB Mouse driver is not functioning correctly, redownload and reinstall the UMS14WME.EXE file. - Click the Driver tab.
- In the Driver tab, verify that the Driver Date is "08/01/2000".
NOTE: If the Driver Date is not "08/01/2000", redownload and reinstall the UMS14WME.EXE file. - Click OK to close the "Sony USB Mouse (HID) Properties" box.
- Click OK to close the "System Properties" box.
- Go to the directory where the UMS14WME.EXE file was downloaded and double-click it.
- At the "Sony USB Mouse Driver Utility for Microsoft Windows Millennium - Welcome" box, click Continue.
- At the "Confirm File Deletion" box, click OK to remove all of the update''s components. Please wait as the installation files are removed.
