What does this do?

This utility updates the hard disk drive firmware and resolves the issue where incorrect data is listed in the control area of the hard drive when the notebook resumes from Suspend or Standby mode. After this occurs, the notebook will then stop responding if the Windows ScanDisk application is run.

What products and operating systems does this apply to?

Operating System(s):Microsoft Windows 98SE

Important Notes
  • After upgrading the firmware on the affected hard disk drive, you will not be able to restore the earlier version of firmware.
  • To install this upgrade, you will need to create a bootable floppy disk to receive the firmware update files. To prepare a floppy disk for use with this update, please refer to the Create A Bootable Floppy Disk procedure.
  • The HD_FRMWR.EXE file will only create the firmware upgrade disk when it is run in Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition (SE). This file will not run correctly under the Windows 2000 operating system. If Windows 2000 has been installed, the computer will need to be booted into Windows 98 or Windows 98 SE to install this update.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.

Download and Installation Instructions
  1. Download the HD_FRMWR.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click HD_FRMWR.EXE to begin the installation.
  3. At the "Hard Drive Firmware Update - Welcome" box, click Continue.
  4. At the "Hard Disk Drive Firmware Upgrade Utility" screen, click Next.
  5. At the "Copying Files" screen, insert a formatted bootable floppy disk in the disk drive (A:) and then click Next.
  6. At the "Setup Complete" screen, verify that "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" is selected. Leave the floppy disk in the drive and click Finish to restart the computer. The computer will boot from the floppy disk and run the firmware update utility. The utility will determine if the hard drive needs to be updated:
    • If the hard drive firmware needs to be updated, the utility will install the updated firmware. Please wait as it will take approximately one to two minutes. Once the process is complete, it will display "PASS" in large letters on the screen.
    • If the hard drive firmware does not need the update, the utility will display "There is no hard disk to update" and then the word "FAIL."
  7. Once the update process is complete, the computer will display a command prompt (A:\).
  8. Please eject the update disk from the floppy disk drive.
  9. Press the CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys simultaneously to restart the computer.

After the computer restarts, the process is complete.
